To assess an emotional response Gestalt therapy uses exercises emphasizing personal responsibility for emotions in the now. The person focusing in the now on an a past experience will be more reliable and more accurate. Directly experiencing these emotions and understanding consequences of certain actions leads to resolution and the proper way of letting go of past negative emotions.
These experiences are also including social contexts of life, and self-regulating actions. For example, the therapist will ask about a past situations that influences the mind. Instead of focusing on describing the event, the focus shifts during sessions on feelings in the present moment about it. This process moves the client beyond the event and the emotions are letting go.
